A MIND IS A TERRIBLE THING!!!!!
is a terrible thing to have. And the reasons and proofs for this are simply too numerous to go into and which do not even begin, nor end, with the fact that a mind is insatiable for wisdom however much that realm finds ludicrous the commonly accepted, and venerated as divine truth, superstitious belief that one will find eternal security by answering once and forever with nothing but the temporal and profanely convenient, current politically correct answers to questions...that should never cease from being asked.
Whereas, a conscience...at least in the one case I know of, which is my own, leaves me to feel alone even in a crowd, alone among the stars and, as opposed to my enemies love I will have, at war with my God...who I can safely say...I hate more than I am hated by Her/Him/Them/It.
THE EXCLUSIONARY SAFETY AND ESCAPE CLAUSE OF AN OLD ZEN PARABLE:
A young student asked the Zen Master, "How long does it take for a man who loves God to become liberated?" And the old man answered, "A whole life time, butterfly." "Then Master," the student wondered out loud, "...how long does it take for a man who hates God to become liberated?" The aging Master then looked deep into the young girl's eyes and whispered, "About a week...but don't tell anyone or we will both be out of a job."
Is this what you were talking about, javablack, or was I receiving telepathic interference again from the two faces of evil...Osama and his spiritual twin brother in the quest to fill the abyss with more tears...George W?

I feel the need to talk to myself, as a bizarre and horrible thing occurred to me, possibly in a dream. I found a blogger named Mr. Minority. This arch-con illustrates the minority thing. He's a white guy in a funny suit. It amazes me that arch-cons really feel the need to pretend to be different and persecuted. But it came to me. It's no different than when our president pretends to be a cowboy (I realize other people probably got this first, the RAM in my brain is in need of an upgrade).
Every movie has some underdog hero who has to fight some big evil. The rugged hero never has anyone agreeing with him. "Minority" conservatives think that not agreeing with an alleged public view is somehow proof of being right. They aren't jealous of real minorities that actually face persecution everyday. They just want to be that lone hero. Some of them may even want to be Jesus, albeit a savior who wishes to leave the poor to die and help the pharisees consolidate control. Oh well. Understanding them doesn't make them any less an enigma.

Everywhere I look I see these far-right loonies bashing academia. Thomas Sowell seems to take this as his top priority while Ann Coulter just adds it to her list of things to rant hatefully about. First we have this whole messy Ward Churchill issue that the right is turning into an excuse to reign in academics with unpopular ideas. Next we have the studies to show how much control liberal "elites" have over academia. I guess since faith in the "liberal media" mythology is starting to fade, the right-wingers need to assault academia. Personally, I think they attack academia because they don't like what the data shows and prefer pseudoreligious, authoritarian "We're right" assertments without the sometimes dangerous information.
I am proud of them that they did actually do some research and use some data. They took a notably liberal school in a notably liberal area and found that only 13% of the faculty were Republicans. This, of course, is out of wack because more than 13% of the public is Republican. I caught one article, where someone took the initiative to make fun of this study, showing that a smaller percentage of professors than the general public believe in telepathy, astrology, and other superstitions. But that's the least of it.
First of all, how many professors consider themselves Democrats? Independents? I personally don't know, but where is the info? Most likely there are more independants than in other parts of the public as well as more Democrats. So far every conservative professor I've met does not claim to be a Republican, but is still conservative (generally not insanely far-right).
Also if you look at different departments, you'll see different congestion levels. The Sociology department is liberal, but what about the Economics department? By the way, Econ and business professors get paid more than most social science professors. Is this an oversight by the liberal elite?
Also, this is another example of the right-wing demanding pure free market in the economic field and not wanting it anywhere else. There are more liberals in academia because more liberals are willing to go to college for 8-10 years to make a decent income in a competative "up or out" field, rather than go to business school for 4-6 years and start working up to a six figure income.
One final rambling: Have you noticed the conservatives who have troubles with the liberal jargon coming out of professors never speak up? Every professor I've had (mostly moderate liberals, but also a few conservatives and radical liberals) has invited dissent and discussion. None that I have known have graded people down for differing views (I've had one make annoying comments on everything he disagreed with in a paper, but still give me a 4.0). And yet, the "dissenters" never speak up and if they do, when they are given an opposing argument, instead of being inspired to argue back or find more data, they just get bent out of shape. I think right-wingers will never be happy until we treat white, male, Christian, upper-middle class conservatives as an ethnic minority and give them their own civil rights movement. I feel sorry for them. And I invite them to continue to whine about how hard they have it and how terribly the Liberal Elitists who rule the earth (without the benefit of controlling the world's major corporations) with their evil atheistic (despite the fact that based on surveys, an atheist will not be elected to the presidency in our lifetime or likely at any time before the end of the world) moral pluralism (which brings tolerance of all beliefs including Christianity) and secular humanism (which in addition to allowing tolerance, pushes for moral concepts such as alleviating suffering, minimizing death, and being kind to one another), persecute them and keep them from imposing their righteous views and merciless stratification system on everyone else.
Since I'm way off subject anyway, sometimes I wonder if the evangelicals simply want to set up the kingdom of the Beast and World War III, just so the world can end and they can get to Heaven (I certainly hope that God is principled enough not to allow people in on such a loophole). If so, they're doing a great job. What was I talking about?
