Guess you received a little unsolicited comment--for my part, I'd rather tithe to something we have a little control over than something we don't.
I regret that we have to work within frameworks we'd obviously prefer to reject, but I'm old enough to appreciate pragmatism. I'm not a young woman anymore, but I'm old enough to remember when we didn't have to make these pleas for an obviously eroding set of liberties.
Now it's your turn;whether you have to beg, borrow, steal, or more, we all have to work together to set it right. And we will. We'll use their own set of rules against them and love it. This has nothing to do with Ann Coulter, or with the Jews, or with God, for that matter. He's got plenty of press time Sundays.

You raise a lot of really good points in your thoughtful entry re: Free Speech TV’s working with credit card companies to expedite fundraising and our tax-exempt status. We've discussed these issues internally for some time now as well. The staff at Free Speech TV takes very seriously the implications of fundraising practices and how it might impact our overall mission and out ability to serve.
The plain, hard truth is that independent media does not happen for free. I know you know that, but it’s worth mentioning as fueling a national television station is real damned expensive. It is unavoidable and necessary for us to work within the current financial system if we are to continue the fight for free speech. Although we don’t condone predatory credit card practices, it is an undeniable fact that credit cards are the primary means by which people in the United States make charitable contributions. Ignoring this fact out of principal would be perilous.
The alternatives to working with the credit card corporations are as problematic. For example, if we worked with checks only, we would still have to work with banks and lending institutions that can be as destructive as the credit card companies themselves. Again, we would fall under the auspices of financial institutions that are utterly at odds with many of the values we fight tooth and nail for on a daily basis. The bottom line here is that we are working within a capitalist financial system that is violently flawed. If we are to eventually improve and overhaul a system of financial oppression and deliberate economic strangulation, we must leech the current infrastructure until such time as we can improve or replace it with a more equitable and just system.
Your points raised regarding our tax-exempt status are another area where this unfortunate logic can be applied. We have to work within the system currently available or face certain doom. The Federal Government doesn’t much care for our work and is likely looking for one excuse to rain down on us with the full weight of their increasingly oppressive institutions. Furthermore, we think it is a good thing that the federal government provides tax-exempt status to non-profit organizations and tax deductions to individuals who support these organizations. It’s the very least the government can do after utterly dismantling community resources, de-funding public services and bankrupting future generations. Seriously. It is the very least they can do. In the absence of these services and resources, non-profits are the last bastion of community support. The odds are so stacked against us that we will take any opportunity we can to promote every possible incentive to people to inspire their investments.

"recently free speech sent out surveys that asked whether or not free speech tv should accept support from "foundations, non profits, charities &/or corporate sponsors".
As I mentioned in my original post, I am more than a little concerned that fstv is even entertaining such considerations as I already see them approaching/flirting with a "slippery slope" as it is with their current willingness/willful "compromising" of principles re: credit card donations & government 501c3 association. If you or someone else from fstv staff can/will shed some insight into this I would very much appreciate it.

By the way, thanks for the book reference,I am always looking for more insight, information & resources of this nature & appreciate your pointing me in the direction of further exploration. How refreshing it is that you/fstv staff appreciate it when someone like myself does ask the hard questions, constructive & respectful critical analysis must have its place, obviously it is this key element that is missing from our current form of government & social structure. First of all, I do apologize for the somewhat delayed responses to your very thoughtful insights. As you already know, it's pledge drive time and that means all hands on deck. Nonetheless, we do take very seriously your comments and love that someone out there is as concerned about these fundamental issues as we are.
With regards to the survey question re: future funding scenarios and the slippery slope that can create, I hear you loud and clear. In large part this survey is intended to better understand what our friends, viewers and donors think about our financial future. We are in no way committing to any of these revenue streams. More than anything, we want to know what people think about how FSTV can remain sustainable and as powerful as possible. I've not yet had a chance to review the survey results, but I would venture a guess that the vast majority of the folks that completed the survey have very similar concerns to the ones you raised.
The underlying theme I'm hearing in your comment is that if the economic viability of the group becomes more important than the mission, we will ultimately fail. Certainly this has been the case for countless organizations and even entire movements. There's a very strong argument to be made that entire swaths of the Civil Rights Movement were systematically and deliberately destroyed by the Ford Foundation.
One of the things I love about FSTV is that this issue of funding and mission is constantly surfacing in meetings and conversations in the hall. All of us here have an ear cocked for danger when it comes to the topic of funding. Many of us here have seen firsthand the devastating effects that foundation and corporate funding can have on community organizations and are desperate to protect FSTV from the sheering forces of these funding pariahs.
On a personal note, I've made it a top priority to not work for any social justice organization that takes money from corporations. I don't care who the business is or what they claim to represent. I can not in good conscience work somewhere that would even open the door to corporate interests while claiming to serve community interests.
Free Speech TV has also done an excellent job of seeking out and working with foundations that are not building wealth on the backs of others. We are very proud of our foundation partners and have gained tremendous power and capacity from their support. Again, the topic of foundations is very well covered in The Revolution Will Not be Funded. You should really check this out.

Let me begin with your points you have made which are very good but missing an element of truth.

provide excellent information about the infrastructure and unlawful and illegal things done.
It appears, the information provided is not used to change the economics but is used to further exploit the people that are disenfranchised to this day.
If anyone cares credit card companies like American Express, Visa...etc. does not contribute to the economics of the people who mainly use their products. For instance people of colour, spend more than they income. However, none of the credit card companies advocate against poverty and give way to opportunities except to the rich or very popular. We would love to have a credit to use among our people and all that is spent is returned to the people of that circle, not outside of that circle. There is a way but how can we have credit cards with our names like "Free Speech Tv Express Card" or "Chocolate Returns Express Card" or
"Happy Returns Express Card", when no ones to stop supporting the problem.

Is it impossible to ask your tribe to start a bank? You can't put a price on awareness. If I watch a show about Navajo people hauling water in the backdrop of the Peabody Coal mIning Company, and living with little or no resources, have I not been provided a glimpse into a world that I would otherwise never have seen? This awareness doe's not in and of itself change anything, but my action, what I do with my new found knowledge does. Now I don't want coal in this country to heat witth. I don't want any association with these mega-giants that continue to tread upon people's dignity and lives. I'm curious why you are marketing deodorant? Doe's perspiration stink? It's a side note, but get real. We are all living in a hypocritical world, brainwashed to the point where we think our natural odors are offending people, and our clothes have to be thrown into landfills to be replaced with Nike and Adidas, and our food has to come from Whole Foods and we can't even think about the basics of living in a world free of greed, self-sacrifice, aging, sharing, understanding, and building a new world which is free of all this hypocrisy.

FSTV has a lot of liberal commentators but no conservatives. I thought this was supposed to be independent TV? In my opinion it is nothing but socialist nonsense.
I would like to see anyone of these shallow brained pinheads on these shows try to debate Sean Hanity of Bill O'Reilly. They won't because they would get destroyed. They would be exposed on how full of crap they really are.

There are plenty of people working two jobs, who don't squander their money in clubs, drink alcohol, do drugs, or have credit card debt, but they still don't have enough to make it all come together for comfort that other people take for granted. My dear, have you ever encountered me upon the street or in the cafe or library. Have you been aquainted with my loving family or friends within my circles of comraderie? Of which history book do you suggest that I shall begin my endeavours of research and intense studies. Of what books are among your favorites. Perhaps I should forego history altogether and embark upon a language adventure. Do tell, of where are you from and what language do you speak, for to adequately convey my feelings to you, methinks it best to overcome certain linguistic obstacles first. Upon the completion of my linguistic studies, I shall then be pleased that you shall have recommended to me a fine book of historical accuracy from which I may begin my study of the great world. Until then, would you suggest I merely bend upon a singular knee and reaching out into the dark unknown of the heavens, pray to the merciful Lord for divine forgiveness for treading upon you in a way which has slighted you, if but only in the least bit. Without a doubt Slavery was wrong. However, reparations will not do anything to help because where is the money going to come from. Are we gonna raise taxes? Cut roads? Cut schools? Someone is gonna have to pay for it.
It is a proven fact that the tribes in Africa sold there people to the colonies. The question is why aren't the reparation activists going after the tribes in Africa or some of the Arab countries? Its simple fact that the United States has money?

So here is the short version because I think I am older than most of them and hopefully because of that...they have more time to waist on you than I do. Ok, so free speech tv is doing another fund raising campaign....and while I understand that they need to raise $money$ to provide this really great alternative media resource....I am confused by a couple of things that seem to be in conflict, so if anyone here can explain the following I would appreciate it.
1. Free speech tv boasts that it doesn't accept any corporate sponsorship, yet they encourage viewers to donate with credit cards. This represents a very real conflict of interest for me.
Why? Because by encouraging donors to use their credit cards they are supporting the corrupt credit card industry directly as well as encouraging individuals to do the same, while digging themselves further into debt. Not to mention that because they show these credit card insignias on the screen they are actually providing these credit card companies with direct passive advertising.
2. Free speech tv also boast that it doesn't take any government funds/grants/sponsorship, yet it informs people that their donations are "tax deductible" because it is a government approved "501c3 non-profit". Again this presents me with a very real conflict of interest.
Why? Because while they may not actually receive "real" funds/grants/sponsorship from the government, they are in essence accepting charity from the government in the form of a tax exempt status as a non profit. Are 501c3 non profits required to report their fund raising activities, $'s, even if they aren't required to claim them as income & pay taxes on them? What about individuals who work for fstv? Is their income tax exempt also? (I am sure they don't all work for free/volunteer)
Is there anyone here who can provide me with real insight into these two issues of conflict I am perceiving. I am not trying to be difficult here, I just want to understand how these conflicts might be reconciled. It bothers me a lot when I see this kind of conflict. Especially in light of the fact that recently free speech sent out surveys that asked whether or not free speech tv should accept support from "foundations, non profits, charities &/or corporate sponsors". I am more than a little concerned that free speech tv would even entertain/consider such an option for funding their continued existence.
I am not ignorant to reality, nor do I see this as "splitting hairs", I know it takes $$$$ to keep such an entity in existence, and that free speech tv says it exists on a "shoestring" budget, although I am sure that many of the individuals that receive pay for their involvement make more than I do. I also know that a vast majority of us here & watching do not have access to the financial resources necessary to make that existence possible, that is also reality....especially now that the economy has been trashed. These conflicts just bother me & I am just looking for meaningful insight & understanding, so if anyone has any...I would be gratefully appreciative if you would share it.
