Iraq War Signing Statements

CQ reports:

President Bush signed the fiscal 2008 Defense authorization bill into law Monday, but not before stating that he reserves the right to disregard several sections.

One such provision sets up a commission to probe contracting fraud in Iraq and Afghanistan. Another expands protections for whistleblowers who work for government contractors. A third requires that U.S. intelligence agencies promptly respond to congressional requests for documents. And a fourth bars funding for permanent bases in Iraq and for any action that exercises U.S. control over Iraq’s oil money.

All of these are significant provisions to just ignore. But that last one touches upon an issue I wrote about last week. In his Memorandum of Justification for ignoring the ban on permanent bases, President Bush refers to his intent to promise the Iraqi government military support for years to come:

The November 26, 2007, Declaration of Principles for a Long-Term Relationship of Cooperation and Friendship between the Republic of Iraq and the United States of America confirmed the commitment of the United States and Iraq to build an enduring relationship in the political, diplomatic, economic, and security arenas and to work together to combat all terrorist groups, including al-Qaida.

Forget the small matter that such a commitment has virtually no popular or political support. What we’re observing is what happens when a series of constitutionally questionable policies meets almost no resistance from congress–each layer comes to serve as justification for (and reinforcement of) the next, until finally we come full circle: The war leads to the bases. The bases inflame the insurgency. The insurgency is used as an argument for the surge. The surge creates the environment for the Declaration of Principles, which are cited as justification for the permanence of the bases, and, therefore of the permanence of the war. And round and round we go.

Wilding in the Whitehouse ?

Dear America : How in GODS NAME Can We as a people awake each new day and put forth our best effort to live a clean Lawful peaceful life when each new day brings news from our capital that the president WE DIDN'T VOTE FOR is making a mockery of the very laws We used as guide lines for the day to day world business when Each new day brings the Oval Offices "make it up as you go" Law's Or the total lack thereof ! How can a regular person wake up and go about there own day to day lives when you can't get from your front door to the sidewalk without bumping into Deputy Barney fife at every corner and at every intersection ready to pounce at a moments notice over a faulty license plate light ? or for a slight crack in the lower left front corner windshield oh yes people ! I observed a brutal "Routine traffic stop" that some poor slob was being overhauled with was anything but "routine" and in the end after having his car tossed upside down and having his handcuffs removed he was allowed to pick up everything the Ossifers tossed out of his car and was told if he continues to ask why he was tossed he will be arrested for Dis-Con and the old interfering with Governmental process ! WE LIVE IN A POLICE STATE and while being brutalized are forced to Pay the OUTRAGEOUS COSTS ASSOCIATED with living in it ! We have an entire county of people being systematically Disinfrancised while at the exact same time having there assets Raped and PLUNDERED by an Administration hell Bent on making the Division between the HAVES & THE HAVE NOTS even greater ! HOW CAN SO FEW CRIMINALLY INSANE CEOs BRING DOWN AN ENTIRE CULTURE HOW ? HOW IS IT ALLOWED ? HOW DID THE POWER STRUCTURE INSTALL SO MANY STONE FACED CRIMINALS ???? While We sat at the edge of our seats with mouths open wide in HORROR ?
