Memorial

The memorial service on May 24, 2008 was hosted by Bob Kendrick of 9news and included the Buckley Joint Color Guard and the students of Civil Air Patrol. The service was held in honor of the Aprox.30Colorado natives dead in the Iraq war and the 236 dead that were stationed at Fort Carson. The families of the dead Coloradoans were asked to stand and be honored for their fallen ‘heroes.’
The event featured the Highlands Ranch Community Chorus. They sang a terrible sounding song, and Amazing Grace was sung by a vintage sounding Kathy Murphy.
The students of Civil Air Patrol watched as the numerous names were called for the last time, including Chance Phelps, age 19. Many of the fallen soldiers were under the age of 21 at their time of death.
One parent of a CAP child volunteered that his daughter would be going into service after her graduation as would about half of the students. “Terror will only end when people learn to be nice to each other.” Said Tony, the father, who also believed the war, is for a good cause.
Was the bad song enough to expel the fire in the hearts of those who have lost children and brothers and sisters for another mans profit? Probably not. Are there still people willing to send their children in to die? A man like Tony is. Pray for his family, and those honored on May 24th.
