paper trail = no more manual counts.
Aww..as I'm posting this, Amy Goodman has a frog in her throat on democracy now..
I love her. She keeps on with the show, barley able to speak.
Things like that just serve to remind me even more that she is so real.
I have had friends drop by when DemocracyNow is on, and sometimes they say something like "Who is that?!", most likely referring to Amy's appearance as not being like that of a lot of the dolled up local TV news anchors. I love to reply, "THAT is a real journalist!"
I'm glad she ditched those cheap looking headphones though.
DN and FSTV will be at the forefront of decent Election 2004 coverage.

No paper trail = disappearing democracy.
Listen to me, I know whereof I speak. I'm writing this from my lil' cube in Corporate America. Specifically, from a company intimately involved in this debacle (a company that rhymes with "PeeBold"). And I'm sure if they knew I was expressing this opinion (via their computer and internet connection, heh-heh) I'm sure I'd be out on my ass.
I'll still say it. Electronic voting without hardcopy verification is BULLSHIT! And every reason they give for it, is obvious BULLSHIT. They say it's too much of a technical challenge to add printers to the voting machines...PLEASE!! They make ATMs, for chrissake! Ever notice the receipt printer on those things? That's all we're asking for. And they insist the systems are completely safe. Oh? Then why are they keeping the computer code a secret? If they have nothing to hide, then they should have no objections to providing that code for independent analysis.
No, the stories they're telling make no sense at all...which suggests that the real motivations are nefarious indeed.

I completely agree that they shouldn't be used, at least, not in their current incarnation. But millions of Americans *are* outraged by this; they demand a paper trail for the ballots at the voting booth. The result? Their votes are thrown out the window. Like most things, I fear people aren't really aware of the situation or its consequences, but I wouldn't go so far as to say American's are getting what they deserve (and probably don't know, like you said, they hold the ultimate power).
And welcome to the forums!

Thanks for the welcome!
Glad to be here. Let me know if I can be of any assistance.
I suppose I've yet to see the outcry from this decison. It makes me feel really good that there really millions outraged bu this.

I don't understand why the people are allowing these electronic divices to be used. Especially after the last election. No paper trail? Come on!
And everyone should feel the same way..
I'm really starting to see why some have said that Americans are getting what they deserve. Maybe they don't know that they hold the ultimate power. Maybe the majority just needs a little free speech tv in em'.
I Want a Paper Trail, without one, I feel less secure.
