From the bit of research we've done in preparation for this event, we've discovered that Colorado's Amendment 48 defines an egg from the point of fertilization, before it has implanted in the uterus, as a human being. This would make murderers of those of us who use many common contraceptives such as birth control pills, doubtlessly increasing the frequency of unwanted pregnancies. It would also restrict any other form of contraceptive that prevents the fertilized egg from implanting in the uterus. It would also outlaw emergency contraceptives, often utilized by rape victims, as well as intrauterine devices (IUDs).

Amendment 48 amounts to a total, or near-total, ban on abortion, and would obviously overturn Roe vs. Wade in the state. But even more bizarre is the potential that under the legislation, women could be charged with negligent homicide for natural miscarriages, which are by no means uncommon. It would also allow men to sue women with whom they had conceived for wrongful death of a child if the woman received an abortion or used contraceptives preventing the fertilized egg from implanting in the uterus.

Join us in Durango at Fort Lewis College (1000 Rim Drive, Durango, Colorado) this Saturday to protest this Amendment and its author, Kristi Burton, who is coming to speak on campus from 1-3pm in Noble Hall, Room 130. Bring pro-choice, anti-A48, feminist literature and info, signs, banners, placards, etc.

See you there!
