SDS Report-Back from Durango Anti-War Protest
A young dissident marches at the front
of a pack of an estimated 300 protesters who
walked down Main Avenue on Friday afternoon.

Our local Durango, Colorado protest commemorating the 5th anniversary of the illegal & immoral invasion of Iraq was a HUGE success. Animas SDS, the local (autonomous, independent, and institutionally unaffiliated) chapter of Students for a Democratic Society mobilized a successful student walk-out, and our infernal drum brigade led the march with their buckets, making a hellacious yet highly appreciated racket that was credited for kicking the energy up to a whole new level.
Local mainstream media estimates a turnout of about 300 people. That might not sound like a lot to you, but Durango is a pretty small town, and that is a very significant, and even news-worthy turn-out (the park we use is right across the street from the newspaper, and we often have trouble even getting them to come take a picture or two and write a few words). I’ve been involved in helping organize these Durango protests for a few years now, and yesterday’s turnout was by far the best in my memory. The students and youth were clearly and significantly majority, also a first in my experience organizing in Durango. Though the youth were there to represent in much greater-than-usual numbers, the march and rally consisted of a broad diversity of community members, from the very young to the very old, and from the more moderate liberal democrat to the more radical and revolutionary anti-authoritarian and anarchist.
