Superheroes, Porn, and Charlie Brown: The 2007 Harvey Awards

By Anne Elizabeth Moore, September 11th, 2007

What with all the talk of comics “saving” literature—which I wasn’t entirely aware needed saving at this moment, although the field could definitely do with a little less commercialism and a lot more talent, but I know critics have been saying that since at least the ’30s—you’d think this year’s Harvey Award winners list might have been a little more diverse.

But no, it’s mostly filled with the same old, same old: superheroes (Daredevil), porn (Lost Girls), and Charlie Brown.

The sole stand-out, Lark Pien, has been drawing brilliant little minicomics and stories for a really long time, and although she won for best colorist, is a remarkable draftsperson and excellent storyteller.

Still, if we’re pinning our hopes on this art form, wouldn’t we prefer it be a bit more appreciative of new and/or diverse voices? We’re going to want to start paying attention to this, my fellow media critics.

I agree that a lot of movies

I agree that a lot of movies have porno scenes in them. It's hard to let your children watch these kinds of things. Nowadays, it's just getting so bad with prostitution, porn, and men hiring london escorts. How do you know what to watch?

I didnt watched any movies

I didnt watched any movies since childhood.. My mom kept away from these kind of things..

I agree with you...ADULT porn is erotic!

Ahhh yes, I still remember the good old days while trying to end the war in Vietnam and naively believing...it would be the last war ever. And in between a slew of arrests and single handedly taking over a building with an unloaded BB gun and holding it for over an hour against an on slough of armed police and tear gas...I also remember the joy of reading all those great underground comics with all the "politically incorrect" sexist and improperly perceived racist art in them. Good and wholesome comics like "Young Lust", "Mr. Whiteman", "ZAP Comix", "The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers", and so many comix that genius of a dirty old man drawing what you are not suppose to draw would draw...R. Crumb.

Ohhh but those days are all gone now. "Ladies" and "Negroes" have all attained an enormous amount of success on the field of exploitation as they find their way, like proverbial Judases, into positions of power. "Lady Generals" sending cutely uniformed fags and dyke's into battle to kill gays and lesbians and children half way around the world and "Negro Corporate Executives and CEO's" making a fine living high up in the business food chain by supporting the status quo of making more and better, or is it worse...WMD? All with nothing else in mind than allowing those real go getters, with all male white minds, to be a role model to all those single moms on welfare and kids in the ghetto to realize that with just a little hard work and stabbing your fellow human in the heart...everyone has the same chance of winning the American Dream...lottery.

And not that it is related...because I have had my share of REAL Women who have bought drinks for me but I am just wondering with all those liberated "girls" out there with wads of money in their Gouchi pants...as crappy as I look, how come none of you have ever surprised me out of nowhere to buy me not only a drink...but a new set of clothes as well?
