The return of Juneteenth
The Juneteenth celebration that once conquered the streets of Northeast Denver's historic Five Points community is now returning for a one day 'trial' on June 14th.
Former mayor Wellington Webb, along with Brother Jeff and several city council members are making the celebration of African American's freedom. The event was canceled in 2007 due to lack of support and reportedly, the increasing amount of gang violence that often times brought the fun to a halt.
While Cinco De Mayo celebrations have consistently had no problems going underway in recent years, the Black festival suffers from lack of support and attendance. Gentrification, and possibly a lack of knowledge and support for the cause may be contributing factors to the recent downfall of the cultural celebration.
I, for one, had no idea until recently that the festival and parade was a tribute to the freedom of the Black slaves.
Hopefully in light of recent events in the world, and a more severe separation of the Black race, African Americans all around the state will come out to attend.
