So What Are YOU Going To DO About It?!
aagent green ~ you said your parents are enraged, how enraged are they? Because the degree to which they and indeed all of us, are willing to go to resolve this and many other realities will in turn determine the reality(ies) we all experience. Are you/they/us enraged enough to take the words written by Thomas Jefferson, in the Declaration of Independence to heart, mind & hands?
As I have now crossed the thresh hold into what is commonly accepted as "middle age", I am coming to realize that I am experiencing the consequences of the realities represented by the generations that have come before me. Generations steeped in blissful ignorance of the potential realities they were creating at the time. My children will experience the consequences of the realities that have been generated by the generations that came before them, and no one is more responsible for that than the individuals who brought those children into this reality, and so it goes. As I look forward to completing my 41st human year of existence upon this amazing planet we call Earth, I am grief stricken by the ease with which one human willingly turns against another when challenging experiences & realities arise before them. So quick to blame other instead of ourselves for the suffering we experience. Turning a blind eye to the reality that we all share common sufferings.
We all share so many common causes, yet instead of allowing these common causes to unite and strengthen us, we choose instead to be divided by that which make us unique. We celebrate diversity in words, but not in deeds. We claim we support equality, but as was posted else-where in this community earlier this week....."some restrictions apply". Universal equality is conditional in the land of greed & home of the depraved.
Let me ask you, the reader, and aagent green something........How would you want to be treated, if you were the "illegal" immigrant? That is the question we must answer in order to know how we should treat those that come to our country...for whatever reason they are here. By the way, that reality is that those reasons can most likely to traced right back to our very own country & it's government & corporations! As well as generations of blissfully ignorant individuals.

Remember your supposed grandparents paid, this is why they live in other countries and received 2 to 3 thousand a month. Did you checkout Ireland,England, and India, social security checks? Stop badgering the spanish people they are only doing what your ancestors did.

I used to love sitting on my great-grandparrents lap, listening to the stories of how they struggled to be here, how long it took them to learn the language, and the work labor force that paid low wages. Coming here in 1907, they were around 19 yrs.old, there is NO WAY any peasant in Europe got 2 or 3 thousand dollars a year at that age or when they retired, and you say per month. HA!! Lets upgrade that amount of 2-3 thousand to modern day value shall we, since a bottle of pop back then was 4 or 5 cents and you can't get one for that price now, now they are around $1.00 so that's around 20 times more, you're talkin more than 40-60 thousand a month ! Why would you leave? Impossible to be true. Who told you that story?
Maybe we should turn to our history books and point out to people like Ms. Choctaw American National why today's American is not willing to accept this new kind of immigrant any longer.
Back in 1900 when there was a rush from all areas of Europe to come to the United States, people had to get off a ship and stand in a long line in New York and be documented. Some would even get down on their hands and knees and kiss the ground. They made a pledge to uphold the laws and support their new country in good and bad times. They made learning English a primary rule in their new American households and some even changed their names to blend in with their new home.
They had waved good bye to their birth place to give their children a new life and did everything in their power to help their children assimilate into one culture.
Nothing was handed to them. No free lunches, no welfare, no labor laws to protect them. All they had were the skills and craftsmanship they had brought with them to trade for a future of prosperity. Most of their children came of age when World War II broke out. My grandfather fought along side men whose parents had come straight over from Germany, Italy, France and Japan. None of these 1st generation Americans ever gave any thought about what country their parents had come from. They were Americans fighting Hitler, Mussolini and the Emperor of Japan. They were defending the United States of America as one people. When we liberated France, no one in those villages were looking for the French-American or the German American or the Irish American. The people of France saw only Americans. And we carried one flag that represented one country. Not one of those immigrant sons would have thought about picking up another country's flag and waving it to represent who they were. It would have been a disgrace to their parents who had sacrificed so much to be here. These immigrants truly knew what it meant to be an American. They stirred the melting pot into one red, white and blue bowl.
And here we are in 2008 with a new kind of immigrant who wants the same rights and privileges. Only they want to achieve it by playing with a different set of rules, one that includes the entitlement card and a guarantee of being faithful to their mother country. I'm sorry, that's not what being an American is all about. I believe that the immigrants who landed on Ellis Island in the early 1900's deserve better than that for all the toil, hard work and sacrifice in raising future generations to create a land that has become a beacon for those legally searching for a better life. I think they would be appalled that they are being used as an example by those waving foreign country flags.
The Statue of Liberty happens to mean a lot to the citizens who are voting on the immigration bill.

2. Following the link I find a small story of one person getting a check for $22.54 per month, I thought you were going to show me the S.S. checks for $2,000 to $3,000 from Europe back in the early 1900's.

My point was about not looking forward to having any money left in the S.S. program for me to collect in 27 years, or for that matter anyone to collect in 27 years. My point is S.S. moneys are promised to the people, that pay into it, when they retire. On that subject, the older baby boomers have already started to collect now with a million more left to start collecting this decade.
